Dozens Dead in Ukraine as Fresh Violence Flares in Kiev

"Oranges and lemons, say the bells of St Clement's,

You owe me three farthings, say the bells of St Martin's,

When will you pay me? say the bells of Old Bailey

When I grow rich, say the bells of Shoreditch."

KIEV, Ukraine----The heart of the Ukrainian capital plummeted into renewed bloodshed on Thursday, shattering a truce reached just hours before between the government and demonstrators that was aimed at ending the country's political crisis.

"You knew the last line!" said Winston.

The fresh spasm of violence began when protesters broke through police lines hemming them inside Independence Square, the symbolic center of Kiev. As they marched toward the parliament, they were targeted by sniper and automatic-weapons fire, witnesses said.

"Yes, I knew the last line. And now, I am afraid, it is time for you to go. But wait. You had better let me give you one of these tablets."

A presidential statement said that dozens of police were killed or wounded in the hail of fire. Ukraine's health ministry late Thursday put the casualty toll since the violence erupted on Tuesday at 67 dead and 562 wounded.
